BEEN BLACK
Been Black: A visual meditation for Black Women a poignant video released on the 4th of July featuring found images from online popular culture and historical Black moments. In honor of Black woman and our contributions to this society and the world. I recorded this 2 years ago, but the words still ring relevent to struggles and beauty of being a Black woman. Until we all free let the voice of a Black woman ring. Happy 4th. edited and performed by me produced by Julian Karahalios @just_kidding_77 instagram.com/tv/CCOjsriHWLZ/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet -
Blood written & directed by Shaina Lynn
Donate: gofundme.com/f/blood-production Tickets:highwaysperformance.org/event/shaina-lynn-simmons-blood/ Blood written & directed by Shaina. This work traces the deep fissures in the relationships between Black men and women to its onset in our formative years. Through movement, text, and song, Shaina sheds light on the early stages of misogynoir to show how that has lead to the normalized mistreatment of black women and the fractured communication in Black relationships that currently threatens Black love. Blood sheds light on the origins of this intersectional oppression in childhood where the disproportionate amount of responsibility placed on Sister (Melissa Barrow) has fractured her relationship with Big Brother (Michael Tomlin III) and though she has the love and support of Little Brother (Nick Allen), the friction from the inequality remains present as the three must navigate their relationships amongst each other without parental guidance. Oya/Afro Futuro
A film by Shaina The Braid hairstyles are syncretized with Oya, warrior of stormy waters. She connects death with rebirth. Interlacing each moment of the Black woman’s journey to actualize herself without the limiting projection of the past. AfroFuturo (n.) is the historical, mythological, and contemporary realities of Afro Cuban and Afro American women. for more information on Afro Future visit: theshainalynn.com/afro-futuro/ Collaborators: Tanya Orellana, Beryl Brachman, Jocelyn Dimaya, Tionna Brunson & Amber Jones Filmed by: Lydia Hicks Edited by: Carol Ericsson -

Drown In Your Sorrows written and directed by Shaina Lynn Shot by Prince David and the Love x Art Collective Wait in the water, the baptism of the mind and the heart…and the lungs? When your reality gets heavy, will you chose to stink or to shed what’s holding you and float above? Drown In Your Sorrows is a silent film that explores the cycle of life, death…and rebirth. -
Oshun/Afro Futuro
A film by Shaina AfroFuturo (n.) is the historical, mythological, and contemporary realities of Afro Cuban and Afro American women. The Weave hairstyle is syncretized with Oshún, the deity of the sweet waters of the river. This figure explores the tragedy of how western colonization has oppressed beauty of the natural Black woman, which is best expressed in the image of the Weave hairstyle since it, too, has transformed into a symbol of that which is unnatural to fit a prevailing standard of beauty. In this film the image of Oshún and the removal of the wig symbolize the literal and metaphoric assimilation. for more information on Afro Future visit: theshainalynn.com/afro-futuro/ Collaborators: Tanya Orellana, Beryl Brachman, Jocelyn Dimaya, Tionna Brunson & Amber Jones Filmed by: Lucia Moscarella Edited by: Carol Ericsson

Bayou Blues written and performed by Shaina Lynn
BAYOU BLUES dives deep into the consciousness of a black girl’s pursuit to find air amidst the drowning waves of colorism in New Orleans. Shaina Lynn takes the audience through the alluring culture of Mardi Gras, Bounce music and second line parades to shine light on the city’s dark history of internalized racism. With spoken word, song, dance and rap she shares her story, based on true-life experiences. A tale of transformation and healing for all, Lynn’s powerful one-woman show questions the current impact of colonialism and race on communities of color. Run time: 45mins Talkback time: 15-20mins Designers Set design: Tanya Orellana Sound Design: Sam Sewell Animation: Ilana Kirschbaum and Julia Newhide Stylist: Rose Strasen Lighting Design: Pei-Yu Lai Drummers: Carl Pillot & James Waterman Band Director: Malachi Whitson Past Directors: Brian Carbine (2015), Monty Cole (2017) Shaina Lynn was selected as the 2017 Curatorial Fellow presenting Bayou Blues at Carolina Performing Arts’ Historic Playmakers Theater. For the UK premiere, Shaina collaborated with Los Angeles director, choreographer and arts curator Brian Carbine, assembling a team of designers, choreographers and animators. At the 2015 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Bayou Blues was nominated for an Amnesty International Freedom of Expression Award. At the 2013 New Orleans Fringe Festival, Bayou Blues was listed as one of the Top 12 Must See Shows by Offbeat.com.
